George Henry Moody- 1901-1983
The History of George H. Moody Middle School-
George H. Moody Middle School was initially opened in 1951 as the
original Hermitage High School. The school was built to replace the
old Glen Allen High School. A former principal of Glen Allen, George
Henry Moody, was appointed the first principal of Hermitage High
School. He served in this capacity until 1956, when he was promoted to
HCPS central office, eventually becoming the Superintendent of Henrico
County Public Schools.
In 1972, the school was renamed Hermitage Middle School, following the
opening of the new Hermitage High School on Hungary Springs Road.
George H. Moody's integrity, service, and dedication to improving the quality and standards of education in Henrico were exemplary. He left an indelible mark on Henrico Schools during his thirteen years as its Superintendent. To honor his lifetime of service to the County of Henrico, on November 5, 1978, Hermitage Middle School was renamed for him. Since then, the school has been known as George H. Moody Middle School.
Moody Middle School greeted the 21st century and the building's own 50th anniversary by undergoing a $10 million dollar renovation from 2000 to 2002. Veteran teachers and alumni watched in amazement as their classrooms from earlier years and the once wide hallways and vaulted ceilings were brought up to date and down to size. The classrooms were replaced with a new, improved look designed and equipped to meet 21st century educational and technological standards.
Almost 60 years since first opening our doors, Moody Middle School continues to meet the future every day!
