Principal's Message

Dear Byrd Middle School students and families,

It is that time of year, once again.  Summer is winding down, and I am sure your thoughts are busily turning toward the 2011-2012 school year.  As every school year bring us new challenges whether they are in the classroom, on the sports field, or simply in navigating the day-to-day events of middle school life, I am excited by the success that can follow each challenge.

This year, we will be facing our 2011-2012 challenges and finding our successes under the theme of:

Take the ChALLenge.  GAME ON.”

Whether you love traditional board games, video games, or sports games, they each hold the thrill of developing a strategy, facing the challenge, and finding the victory. Those same steps fit so well with how we envision our upcoming school year. At Byrd, we will be challenging students daily to strive for their personal bests in their learning, their conduct, and their extracurricular activities.

This theme also allows us to continue with a portion of our “All in the Zone” theme from last year.  For those returning to Byrd, you will remember that “ALL” emphasizes our key words--Act, Learn, Lead.  Last year, students turned in over 600 Score Cards where teachers personally noted over 6,200 ways that students modeled great acting, learning, and leading. Our students’ efforts earned them privileges and prizes.  We will continue this during 2011-2012, so parents please ask your student often to see what great things their teachers are noting on Byrd Game Cards.

Finally, we have many items planned for our 2011-2012 school year.  For example, our county will be welcoming the national program Rachel’s Challenge in October.  We also hope to host a Byrd community movie night and other fun events to keep us better connected.  I hope you will join us for some of our events this year.  If I can answer questions or discuss your ideas or concerns, please contact me by calling 750-2630 or emailing me at sepope@henrico.k12.va.us.

Sincerely,

Mrs. Sharon Pope

Principal
