About Us

Pocahontas Middle School is located in central Virginia, west of the City of Richmond in the suburban far west end of Henrico County.   The middle school is named for Pocahontas, daughter of the powerful chief of the Algonquian Indians in the Tidewater region.  Pocahontas married the successful tobacco planter, John Rolfe, while in 1614.  It is thought that they settled at Varina Farms Plantation where Pocahontas converted to Christianity and was given the name Rebecca.  As a result, a goodwill relationship between the English and Indians ensued.

When Pocahontas Middle School first opened its doors on February 4, 2000, features of the rural community were clearly visible.  Today, its farms and cows have been replaced with thriving businesses in Short Pump, the surrounding community.  Since the school year began in September, Pocahontas teachers first taught their students at Byrd and Short Pump middle schools. However, when students and teachers finally entered the Pocahontas Middle School building in early February 2000, it was the first school in AMERICA to open in 2000 - the new millennium.

Terry Moore was the first principal of Pocahontas Middle School and was followed by Ray Honeycutt.  Current principal, Kim Sigler, was preceded by Tracie Weston.  Pocahontas received the U.S. Department of Education Blue Ribbon School of Excellence Award in 2006.
