You may also call the school that your child will attend for additional enrollment information. To enroll a child in Henrico County Public Schools the child must reside in Henrico County with a parent or court appointed legal custodian.

Specific requirements for grade levels:

Kindergarten:

  • Kindergarten students must be age 5 by September 30 of the current school year
  • Comprehensive Physical Examination: Pupils entering elementary school for the first time must have a physical examination from a United States qualified licensed physician, a licensed physician assistant or a licensed nurse practitioner acting under the supervision of a licensed physician. The physical must be performed no earlier than 12 months prior to the date such pupil enters school. School Entrance Health Form

Grades K-5:

  • First-time or transferring students are required to submit a comprehensive physical examination. Pupils entering elementary school for the first time must have a physical examination from a United States qualified licensed physician, a licensed physician assistant or a licensed nurse practitioner acting under the supervision of a licensed physician. The physical must be performed no earlier than 12 months prior to the date such pupil enters school.

    • Withdrawal papers from last school attended
    • Copy of last report card
  • All students transferring to schools from other systems in Virginia or from out-of-state must meet certain state medical requirements, and documentation must be presented before the children may attend school.

Grades 6-12:

  • First-time or transferring students must submit a recent transcript. Your new school will send for a transcript.
  • Tdap – As of 2005, one Tdap vaccine is required for all students entering 6th grade. Retroactively, this also includes all students who are in grade 7-10 in the 2010/2011 school year.  All tetanus containing vaccines given within the past 5 years are acceptable proof of immunization.

General enrollment requirements for all students:
The Commonwealth of Virginia requires the following criteria for your child to be eligible to attend public school:

  • Certified Birth Certificate  (must be a certified copy)
  • Child's Social Security Number
    Number must be provided within 90 days of admission. If your child is ineligible to obtain a social security number or if you do not wish to provide your child's social security number, the Superintendent or his designee will waive this requirement, upon written request.
  • Immunization Requirements
    • Hepatitis B – A minimum of three (3) properly spaced doses
    • Diphtheria – A minimum of four (4) with one on or after the fourth birthday
    • Tetanus – A minimum of four (4) with one on or after the fourth birthday
    • Pertussis – A minimum of four (4) with one on or after the fourth birthday
    • Measles – Two (2) properly spaced doses. The first dose shall be administered on or after the first birthday
    • Mumps- Two (2) properly spaced doses
    • Rubella – One (1) dose shall be administered on or after the first birthday
    • Varicella – Two (2) doses shall be administered on or after the first birthday to susceptible children born on or after January 1, 1997. The second dose pertains to new students as of the 2010-2011 school year.
    • Polio – A minimum of four (4) with one on or after the fourth birthday
    The attending school must have a copy of the completed physical and immunizations, signed by health care provider, at time of enrollment or prior to starting school.
  • Proof of Legal Residency - Deed, house contract (closing date less than 90 days), current lease agreement, current rent receipt, current mortgage statement, or most recent tax assessment - and Current (no more than 30 days old) utility bill - and Picture ID: Driver's license, DMV or Military ID - In the case of families living with other families, please contact the school for Proof of Legal Residency Address Affidavit forms and requirements. Copies of each residency document will be maintained in the student's file. The school shall redact (block) out personal information of the parent not necessary to document residency, including rent or mortgage amounts, bank balances, and account numbers. All other information shall remain unaltered. Parents or legal guardians of students enrolled in Henrico County Public Schools are required to report an address change to every Henrico County school in which they have a child enrolled within 10 school days of the move. They must report this address change by completing and submitting the "Student Change Form" for each student and providing the required residency documentation to each respective school.
  • Other Considerations for Parents
    • Only a natural parent, adoptive parent, court appointed legal custodian or a person with a military power of attorney may enroll a child. (Non-military or traditional powers of attorney are not acceptable.)
    • A foster parent may enroll a child with the consent of the child’s legal custodian. Foster parents enrolling children in their care must present at enrollment a copy of the Court Order that identifies the child’s legal custodian.
    • If your child currently receives Special Education Services, bring a copy of the current IEP or 504 Plan.
