Welcome to the web site for Douglas Southall Freeman High School. The school is named for Dr. Douglas Southall Freeman, well-known newspaper editor, historian, and author of Pulitzer Prize winning biographies of George Washington and Robert E. Lee. Opened in 1954, the school has served a relatively consistent attendance zone in western Henrico County for more than 50 years and is the focus of community pride and support. Academic achievement is our heritage and continuing mission. High standards have been set for our 1600 students by the alumni, many of whom continue to live in the community and send their children to the school. Each Senior Class distinguishes itself with National Merit Finalists, Commended Scholars, admission to the most prestigious institutions of higher learning in Virginia and the nation, scholarships received, and significant achievement in athletic and extracurricular activities.

The fine arts play a significant role in the life of the school. Our award-winning Rebel Brigade band marched in the 2004 New Year's Parade in London! A similar trip to Scotland is being planned. Our students also enjoy strong programs involving travel, competitions, and awards in choir, orchestra, drama, and art.

With tremendous support of parents, alumni, and the community, funds have been raised to provide state-of-the-art athletic facilities for our students, including a field house, spectator stands, all-weather track, expanded and improved fields, lighting, and concession stands. A new magnificent strength training facility was dedicated in May of 2006. Douglas Freeman historically has been extremely competitive in football and basketball, and annually challenges for regional and state championships in cross country, wrestling, track, tennis, and soccer. Our combined winning percentage for all sports for 52 years is an amazing 67%. Every year we have one of the highest percentages of student participation in extra-curricular activities sponsored by the Virginia High School League. Win or lose, Freeman students are expected to model the highest standards of sportsmanship and competitive excellence. Over 70 clubs, activities, and service organizations provide our students with opportunities to supplement their academic, athletic, and social growth beyond the classroom.
