Deep Run High School is named after Deep Run School in celebration of Henrico County Public Schools' 300 year old tradition of excellence in education. Deep Run School was a two-room schoolhouse that can still be found on the grounds of Short Pump Elementary School. Deep Run High School is located in Short Pump, the Far West End suburb of Richmond, VA. In 2002, Deep Run opened its doors solely to freshmen and sophomores as the newest member of Henrico County's public schools. It graduated its first class on June 16, 2005. Lenny Pritchard, a former Deep Run History teacher and Head Football Coach, was named principal in 2008. Deep Run houses the Center for Information Technology, a specialty center that prepares students for higher education in related fields of computer science and information technology. Admission into the center is facilitated through an extensive application process for rising freshman. Deep Run prides itself in its academic success and was named one of the Nations “Best” High Schools by the Washington Post's High School Challenge (formerly U.S. News & World Report) in 2007, 2008, 2009, and 2010 ranking Deep Run in the top 500 high schools in the nation. Deep Run High School has a number of co-curricular activities which have received many district, region, state and national awards including Marching Band, Blue Cheese Robotics, Visual Arts, Orchestra, Vocal Music, and Drama. Deep Run also participates in the Virginia High School League’s AAA Colonial District and Central Region in athletics. Deep Run’s fall sports include Football, Volleyball, Golf, Cross Country, Sideline Cheerleading, Competition Cheerleading, and Field Hockey. Winter Sports include Basketball, Gymnastics, and Wrestling. Spring Sports include Baseball, Softball, Track and Field, Tennis, and Soccer. There is also a Club Lacrosse team in the spring. Deep Run offers variety of clubs and honor societies for students. In the fall of 2008, Deep Run High School was selected to partner with Virginia Advanced Study Strategies (VASS) in an Advanced Placement Incentive Program. Virginia is one of the seven states to receive funding from the National Math/Science Initiative (NMSI) to assist in training teachers and incentive programs for students. The programs emphasis is to increase the number of students who are enrolled in AP Math, Science, Computer Science and English. Students must attend three Saturday help sessions for each AP course they are enrolled in. Students who earn qualifying scores at 3, 4 or 5 on AP Math, Science, Computer Science and/or English exam(s) will receive financial incentives of $100 per score.
