Welcome to J. R. Tucker High School, home of the TIGERS! Our theme for the 2011-2012 school year is 4,636,800…Make Every Second Count! Regarding teaching and learning, our school community realizes that every second is vitally important and stresses excellent attendance, time management, and attention to studies. Tucker High School is the only school in Henrico County to house three specialty centers.
1. Center for World Languages - Students who are accepted into this center experience a rigorous, innovative program of study where they are immersed in their target language, either Spanish or French, for 65% of their school day. Students receive specialized instruction through summer enrichment courses, world travel and exchange options, business partnerships, guest speakers, community service, and field experiences. They develop a high level of proficiency in a second language as well as exposure to a third language.
2. International Baccalaureate (IB) – This is our second year in the IB world. We earned our official IB authorization during the 10-11 school year and are now an IB World School.
3. Advance College Academy (ACA) – This coming year is the first year of ACA at Tucker. Thirty-five freshmen have been chosen to lead the way, and in four years, these students will graduate with an advanced HCPS diploma and an Associate of Science in Social Science degree from J. Sargeant Reynolds Community College. Successful graduates will have 61 credits eligible for transfer to a four- year college or university. Tucker is the first high school in Virginia to do this, and “all eyes will be on us” as these students navigate through this program and go on to college.
Our facility is a campus-style school with 19 buildings on 44 beautiful acres. We pride ourselves on our diversity because 39 countries/21 different home languages are represented at Tucker. Our students and teachers agree that this is what we love the most about our school. Tucker offers many clubs, honor societies, FIRST Robotics, and 34 Virginia High School League teams. This, along with our wide variety of courses and electives, make us a great school where students learn, develop, and prepare for the 21st century. We enjoy our Tucker Tigers every second of every day!
