Gifted Education Program for Grades 4-5

MAYBEURY ELEMENTARY SCHOOL

Henrico County Public Schools offers the following services to provide academic challenge for elementary gifted and advanced learners:

¯     A continuous process of gifted identification based on the use of multiple criteria.

¯     Advanced Curriculum Essentials Cards for English, mathematics, science and social studies.

¯     Problem-based learning units developed by William and Mary Center for Gifted Education.

¯     Use of differentiated instructional strategies including advanced content, student choice, and emphasis on peer, self and teacher assessment. 

 

The following enrichment opportunities are available for gifted and advanced students at Maybeury Elementary School.

 

Twenty-Four Game Challenge: Innovative math games designed to improve creative problem solving.

JacobÕs Ladder: Targets reading comprehension through an inquiry process from basic understanding to critical analyses.

 

 

Experimental Design:  While developing a science topic into an experimental design, students learn to investigate research problems using inductive and deductive thinking.

 

 

 

 

 

 

 

 

 


       

 

 

Greek and Latin Stems: Students learn Greek and Latin stems to increase their vocabulary and prepare them for the verbal section of the SAT.

 

 

Teachers participate in training opportunities in gifted education through:

¯     graduate courses in gifted education.

¯     Henrico County Public Schools Summer Institute Programs in characteristics of gifted learners, social-emotional needs of gifted learners, differentiation of instruction, and student assessment and evaluation.

¯     attendance at state and national gifted conferences.

¯     after-school workshops.
