Working in conjunction with our Olweus
Bullying Prevention program, Rivers Edge has fully implemented a High
Five Hero program in which students are given high fives and
kindness coins for their classes whenever they are caught being kind to
others, respecting others, helping others, including
others, and/or encouraging others. Weekly classroom meetings with honest, open dialogue focus on these characteristics as well as anti-bullying topics.
Our 2010-2011 High Five Community
Service Projects:
-
The Rivers Edge
students showed their High Five Hero pride during their winter parties.
K-2 students decorated gift bags and filled them with useful toiletries
for the clients of the Daily Planet. Students in grades 3-5 made
fleece scarves and donated them to the Daily Planet as well.
- During the months of October and November, Rivers Edge eagles "moved their feet so others could eat." Families pledged to donate multiple cans of food based on the number of laps their children ran during their six-minute Success Week laps. As a result of this project we were able to donate nearly 4,000 cans to the Henrico Christmas Mother.
- We also created a partnership with Montrose Elementary School. Our first
project was to collect school supplies to get their students and
teachers off to great start. Many thanks to the generous donations our families made. The staff and students at Montrose were sincerely grateful! In February our SCA purchased "Do you best on the test" pencils for Montrose 4th and 5th graders to use during their SOL/HAT writing assessments. In addition, Rivers Edge families donated fun erasers to send along to all of the Montrose students and staff members.
We are so proud of our students and their families for supporting our community service projects during the 2009-2010 school year.
- We collected school supplies for the Henrico Education Foundation before school even started for the year and during the month of September. We had a mountain of school supplies for less fortunate kids right here in Henrico County.
- In October, we raised $2,619 for the American Heart Association through participation in Jump Rope for Heart!
- Students collected over 5,000 cans for the Henrico Christmas Mother and over 1,000 pairs of gently used shoes for Juma's Shoes (the collection effort by the man named Juma who is sending shoes home to Uganda for Christmas) in November.
- The students will create fleece blankets and decorated pillowcases during the Winter Parties in December to be delivered to the children in the hospital at MCV.
- During the month of February, we collected over $1,300.00 in our Pennies for Patients campaign to benefit the Leukemia & Lymphoma Society.
- In April we collected several boxes and bags of arts/crafts supplies for Full Circle Grief Center. Grieving families can visit this center to choose art,
writing, movement, music, crafts, play, or discussion to process their
feelings or remember their loved ones.
- The Rivers Edge PTA and SCA worked during the month of May to initiate our collaboration project with Montrose Elementary School here in Henrico County. The PTA purchased reusable water bottles with the Montrose name and logo that the students will be given as part of their field day celebrations. In addition, the SCA organized SOL treats buckets for each of the classrooms. These included pencils, Smarites, and either sidewalk chalk or jumpropes for recess.
