History
In September of 1958, Bethlehem Elementary School opened its doors for the first time with Joseph Rotella as the principal. At that time, the school served between 600 and 700 students in grades one through six; there was no kindergarten class. At that time our mascot was a bear. We were known as the Bethlehem Bears.
In 1981, the name of the school was changed to Charles M. Johnson Elementary School in honor of Mr. Johnson who had served as the school’s first PTA president and as a member of the Henrico County Board of Supervisors. During the early 1980’s, the student enrollment dropped and Building B was used as a storage room for county records. This is when doors were cut through the walls to connect many of the classrooms. Just in time for our 50th anniversary a new mascot and logo were approved. We are now the Johnson Jaguars.
Today, the school serves approximately 480 students in grades pre-kindergarten through five. When students graduate from Charles M. Johnson Elementary School most attend either Tuckahoe Middle School or Brookland Middle School.
