History

The Old Glen Allen School began in 1886, as a single class room in the home of Miss Lizzie Holladay. The Glen Allen school on Old Washington Highway was completed in October of 1911 as a two story building with four classrooms, grades one through seven. Between 1911 and 1941 the school served, at varying times, both elementary and high school students. In 1926 the tenth and eleventh grades were added, and the school became accredited. Between 1942 and 1951 Glen Allen was strictly a senior high school, but changed in 1951 to serve only the elementary grades until its closing in 1978.

Today we have grown into a modern school building accommodating over 500 students. Once the location of a lodge and resort, the New Glen Allen School, located on Mill Road, is now part of the Henrico County School system. With easy access to interstate highways, Glen Allen continues to grow as its families commute to many surrounding cities to work.

Philosophy

Our Philosophy at Glen Allen can be simply stated: STUDENTS COME FIRST!

Such a belief is evident in many ways. We invite you to see for yourself. When you tour the school you will see:

Students' art work, projects and writings are displayed everywhere. We have our own Art and Literary Magazine published once a year.

Teachers are interacting frequently with students in different size groups and in many creative locations. Scheduled programs give all students a chance to perform onstage in a musical or play.

Students are learning in a variety of ways using manipulative materials, listening stations, computer labs, and community resources.

Through an Henrico County Initiative for Computers, all elementary schools have at least 5 computers per classroom. Glen Allen has over 250 computers.

Our PTA boasts of nearly a 100% membership each year. There are hundreds of volunteers who are active in and out of the school and keep the programs strong. - The principal, resource teacher, and school counselor have an "open door" policy to students and staff. It is not unusual to see students giving hugs and high-fives to the administrative staff.

It is also not unusual to hear laughter in the halls, feel the warmth of the front office and know that this is a special place to learn
