Variance Information

We have received numerous variance requests for students to be moved according to their 2010 school assignments. The School Board intends to follow its current guidelines with respect to approving variances and does not intend to approve variances due to redistricting issues. Parents who feel they have extreme or unusual circumstances in their personal situations may make variance application at their assigned school.

Phasing Plan for the New Boundaries

The school board has approved the phasing plan for the new attendance boundaries. The phasing plan will be effective beginning with the 2010-2011 school year. Details of the plan are shown in the following table:

Elementary At the elementary school level, all rising kindergarten through third grade students in 2010 will attend their assigned school based on the new school boundaries. Rising fourth and fifth grade students affected by the new attendance boundaries have the option to remain at their old school if parents provide transportation. These rising fourth and fifth grade students may not ride HCPS buses. Younger siblings of these students will not be allowed to stay at the old school if their upper grade siblings decide to stay there.
Middle At the middle school level, all rising sixth and seventh grade students in 2010 will attend their assigned school based on the new school boundaries. Rising eighth grade students affected by the new attendance boundaries have the option to remain at their old school if parents provide transportation. These rising eighth grade students may not ride HCPS buses. Younger siblings of these students will not be allowed to stay at the old school if their upper grade siblings decide to stay there.
High

Ninth Grade Students: All ninth grade students will be required to attend the school in whose zone they live in 2010.

Tenth Grade Students Rezoned to Glen Allen High School: In 2010 all tenth grade students assigned to Glen Allen High School will be required to attend GAHS.

Tenth grade students affected by redistricting, but not zoned for GAHS: Tenth grade students rezoned for high schools other than Glen Allen High School may choose to go to their newly zoned high school OR attend their previously assigned high school. If they opt to attend their previously assigned high school, parents must provide transportation. Transportation will NOT be provided in 2011 when the students are rising eleventh grade students or in 2012 when they are seniors either, so this option will mean that the parents must provide transportation for three years.

Eleventh and Twelfth Grade Students: All eleventh and twelfth grade students must attend their originally assigned high schools and bus transportation will continue to be provided. Younger siblings of these students must follow the information provided above.
