Gifted

The Gifted Advisory Council meeting previously scheduled for Thursday, May 2 has been rescheduled to Monday, May 7, 2012 from 6:30-8pm. The meeting will take place in the multipurpose room of the Eastern Government Center at 3820 Nine Mile Rd., Henrico, Va 23223. This is the last meeting for the 2012-2013 school year.

The Henrico County Public School division is pleased to convey that the implementation of our 2011-2016 Gifted Plan approved by the school board has been enormously successful. There has been an increase in the number of students screened and identified for gifted education. While this is an outstanding accomplishment for our division and serves our goal of realizing and supporting the potential of all students, it also requires that we plan effectively for delivering services to all of these students.

Our Gifted Advisory Council, composed of parents, teachers, student representatives, administrators and school board representatives, has reviewed the data for HCPS and our current delivery models. The Gifted Advisory Council developed several proposals for expanding the program at the elementary school level to meet the needs of all gifted students now and into the future. These proposals were then subsequently reviewed by the elementary gifted teaching staff and elementary principals for input and revision. The revised proposals were posted for public comment for 30 days. In addition, HCPS held two public forums for parents to review the proposals and provide input. The recommended proposals were presented to the Division Leadership Team and the School Board.

With the completion of the Elementary Gifted Expansion Proposal Process, two public parent informational sessions were held early April to review the approved proposals and share the program expansion requirements. Click here to view the informational presentation from the April meeting.

Gifted Advisory Council
The Gifted Advisory Council is the Local Advisory Committee and is composed of parents, teachers, administrators, support staff, community, and student representatives. Selection of members is a function of the membership committee who base its selection upon a balanced representation of parent, professional staff, and community members who reflect the ethnic and geographic composition of the school system. Council members are appointed annually by the school board and can serve up to three years. The Council prepares and submits annually through the division superintendent written recommendations to advise the school board, regarding the extent to which the Gifted Education Plan for the previous year was implemented. The council is an additional contact for corporate and community support. The Council interacts with other advisory councils concerning divisional and regional activities as needed.
